Liverpool

I forgot to mention that while in Sherwood Forest we came across a wedding ceremony taking place near the Old Oak, all white and wispy. Yesterday we had quite the opposite, a gothic wedding all black and sharp. Today, while walking up the steps to the Liverpool Catholic Cathedral we were confronted with a colourful Catholic wedding. Three very different weddings on three consecutive days, what’s in store for us when we get to the Lake District – a wet-and-wild mermaid wedding at Windemere?

Liverpool is Beatles country. It is very difficult to find anything that does not reference the fab-four. That’s okay by me, I was quite happy to immerse myself in Beatlemania for a while. The first stop for Anne and I on a city break is the bus-tour. Get a feel for the city and take it from there. And our first taste of senior citizen concessions! Yes, being 60 means nearly half-price entry almost everywhere. We were a little bit disappointed when the bus driver didn’t ask us to prove our age, a classic response from Anne “You mean I look sixty” she said, the bus driver did very well to respond “not at all – you have an honest face.” Actually, it is true what they say about Liverpudlians, they are very friendly.

We found the Cavern and after marveling at the wall of fame and asking a passerby to take our photo by one of the most famous music venues in the world, we discovered we were standing outside the Cavern Pub not the Cavern Club! Oh the shame. On to the actual Cavern Club which turned out to be much more interesting than I expected. It really is a cavern, way below street-level. It has been extended since the Beatles days but they have kept the ‘cavern’ bit the same.

At the end of the day, we decided to go and say goodbye to our now great friends, the fab four, so in pink chair style we all arranged to meet for a final photo call by the ferry (across the Mersey) to say hello, goodbye – You say yes, I say no
You say stop and I say go go go, oh no
You say goodbye and I say hello
Hello hello
I don’t know why you say goodbye, I say hello
Hello hello
I don’t know why you say goodbye, I say hello.

“In my life ” I feel you have been “Here, there and Everywhere!” “Yesterday” you travelled the “Long and winding road” and there’s “Something” in the way you are both just getting the very best out of this most “magical mystery tour!” It just shows that “all you need is love” and two pink chairs, you can almost travel “across the universe!” I’ll end this little homage and send “all my loving!”
