Donegal

Well hello again! Anne and I are back on the road. Unfortunately, we have not been able to bring our two pink chairs, but we do have two bright and shiny blue suitcases. The holiday actually started in Dublin (a quick and cheap flight from Southampton) but we will be staying there on the return leg, so more about Dublin later. We picked up a super-duper BMW 5M 3 Litre hybrid (my holiday treat) after the usual shenanigans with Europcar about the ‘damage waiver excess’. I nearly applied some excess damage to the guy behind the counter as I waived goodbye.

Out of the car park and straight up the M1 to Dundalk, west through Monagan and Enniskillen (sadly famous for the Remembrance Day bombing), and north to Donegal. Film trivia – Many of the land-based outside scenes of the latest Star Wars movie were filmed in county Donegal.

The Mill Park Hotel was amazing. Big room, big bed, and big food. It was a rest day for us so we ate at the hotel which was a good call. So good that we ate at the hotel for a second night. During the day we drove north up the West Atlantic Way (WAW to my friends) to Killybegs (just as an aside, there are going to be lots of silly names as we go on, Ireland is renowned for the silliest town names on the planet, my favourite to date is Ballyaghnatrillick) which is the biggest fishing port in Ireland. Not much to see, except a lot of very big fishing ships. We stopped along the way at a small coastal farm expecting to see sheep and donkeys. Bet you didn’t know Ireland was famous for Lamas and Emus. Off to Balleek tomorrow.
