Cape Elizabeth

Still no word from Buddy at Carlo’s Bake Shop. We are getting a little concerned something might have happened to him. Cape Elizabeth is a delightful town in Maine on the Atlantic. Famous for the Beach to Beacon race in aid of children’s charities in Maine. Anne and I ran Beach to Beacon in 2014. It is also the home of Dave Jures, father of Joelle Wickens of Mark and Joelle fame. 

After our best meal in the USA so far at the Buttercup restaurant, Natick we suffered the worse meal ever at the Fox Run Mall, Newington on the way to Maine. Do not go to ‘Buffalo Wild Wings’. If you have to, then do not have the Black Bean Burger. I thought I would try the healthy option and go veggie – The Southwestern Black Bean Burger – the waitress was not very impressed when I asked if they had a hammer and chisel available to get through the charcoal crust.

We had a huge welcome from Dave, it was so good to see him again. We sat on his veranda overlooking Casco Bay and the Atlantic sipping Jim Beam over ice. Jim Beam is not Anne’s favourite drink, but I think she enjoyed it. She seemed very happy.

Sunday was a rest day, for Dave and I anyway. Dave drove Anne, in his Toyota Sonata convertible (wow!) over to see Lanie (another US friend) and they spent the day together. Leaving Dave and me to ‘cruise’ slowly around the coast road, sunglasses on and not a chance of being reprimanded for one-handed driving.

Monday and Lanie invited us to Diamond Cove for lunch at the Diamond Cove Restaurant. a quick ferry ride to the island from Portland passing the world’s smallest registered lighthouse, six feet tall with a light beam throw of 100 yards. We pottered around after the meal waiting for the 2.30pm ferry back to the mainland. at 2.05pm while making friends with the Cove museum owner, Anne found out that the return ferry was from the other side of the island nearly one mile away. Pottering turned into a speed-walk, led by Anne who is a professional pace-maker and yes we just made it!

Back to Dave’s for a lobster dinner. Dave is an expert lobster chef, he an I also shared two bowls of clams as an appetiser. Anne was not that interested, I’m not sure why? After the meal, Dave suggested I try his new swing, what! Clams, lobster, red wine, yes that sounds like a great idea. Anne beat me to it – we couldn’t stop laughing.
